Butler sophomore Cameron Bedell is a one-man band. Around age 13, he picked up his father's bass guitar and taught himself the basics. Before long, he was fingering his way around a piano and writing songs.
Now, he's written more than 30 songs and produced two CDs. One song, "Change the World," is about the changes he's witnessed in his friends at Butler. "It's about the students who met here and have taken a whole new outlook on life," he said.
Though he's says he's "not much of a show-choir kid," Cameron was drawn to Butler's Headliners after seeing them perform and attending the summer camp they host. "They were good," he said. "That made my decision easier." Cameron is also a member of Smorgaschords, Butler's barbershop quarter, currently ranked 8th in the world.
Inspired by dance footwear sitting atop Headliner director Valerie Mack's desk, Cameron wrote a song called "Dancing Shoes" that depicts the relationship between Valerie and her daughter Stevie. Cameron said there's more to the song than just the mother-daughter story, though. "Miss Mack totally takes the best out of all of us and helps us to realize how good we are," Cameron said. "She's like our mom, too. She took our hand and brought us up." |
